Juices for belly bloating | Fight belly bloat with juicing

juices for belly bloating

Do you often suffer from the sluggishness and discomfort of belly bloating?  You might juice, but aren't sure how to make juices for belly bloating.

It’s a fairly common thing to have happen.  It makes you feel like you’ve swallowed a soccer ball that’s just sitting there in your tummy.  Often your abdomen “pooches out” so you can’t fit comfortably into your clothes.

Bloating is a sign of excessive gas in your intestines or that fluid has built up between the cells in your abdominal area.  Often, bloat can be prevented or reversed just by altering your daily diet and drinking plenty of water and other healthy fluids like juice.

Among other things, a diet that’s high in salt can cause water retention, which in turn sometimes brings on bloat.  That’s because the excess salt dehydrates your body’s tissues, so it retains water to combat it.  It’s pretty clear what you should do if your high-salt diet is causing your bloated feeling and belly distension – cut back on salt and processed foods, and drink lots of water to flush out all that extra salt in your system.  Overindulging in alcohol (especially beer) or carbonated soft drinks (the bubbles cause gas) sometimes brings on bloat.  You know what to do there, too.  And sometimes bloat is associated with a gastrointestinal upset like indigestion or constipation.

Besides drinking more water and cutting back on your salt, alcohol and carbonated beverage intake, is there anything else you can do?  Are there specific juices that will help make the discomfort of bloat go away?

People have a tendency to reduce their fluid intake when they’re feeling bloated.  Their theory (conscious or otherwise) is that their body is retaining water, so the bloating should correct itself if they drink less water and other fluids.  In truth, though, people who are suffering from tummy bloat should drink more juice and water, not less.  That’s because retaining fluids is your body’s way of preventing dehydration.  So, when you’re fighting bloat, drink plenty of juice, water and other fluids, not less.

Here are four common fruits and veggies that you can use to make juices for belly bloating:

Lemon

Lemon is a gentle, natural laxative and diuretic.  Because lemon possesses these properties, drinking lemon juice can help alleviate constipation and flush the excess salt from your system.  Once the extra salt is removed, your body will reduce the amount of water it retains (thereby helping you to “debloat”).  Try drinking lemon juice with some peppermint leaves sprinkled in (the peppermint helps with indigestion).  Between the lemon and the peppermint, you’ll enjoy a wholesome and flavorful juice that can help reduce your bloat.  As with any juice you’re drinking to fight belly bloat, drink it directly from the glass (not through a straw) so you’re not swallowing any extra air (which can be another cause of bloat).

Celery

Celery has long been used to regulate the bowels and control excessive intestinal gas.  Compounds in celery have been shown to reduce the amount of water that’s retained by the body, and its high water content can help flush out excessive amounts of salt.  Juicing it by itself, or adding some stalks to your regular juice recipes can help you fight off belly bloat.

Cucumber

Likewise, cucumber’s high water content make it one of the great juices for belly bloating.  Like the other types of produce I’m highlighting in this article, cucumber is a natural diuretic.  It contains so much water that it helps remove excess salt from your system, in turn helping to prevent water retention and thereby helping to reduce bloating.  Juicing cucumber will give you a healthful anti-bloat beverage with a cool, refreshing flavor.  Or, you could simply add some to your usual juice recipes.

Watermelon

Virtually every type of melon provides health benefits, but watermelon’s extremely high water content (about 92% of a watermelon’s flesh consists of water) means it’s a potent natural diuretic.  Like juicing lemon, celery, and/or cucumber, juicing watermelon can help flush excess salt from your system.  That, in turn, will “convince” your body that it doesn’t need to retain water in order to protect itself against the possibility of dehydration that excess salt can cause.  Juice it by itself, or add some to your usual juice recipes to help combat belly bloat.

As you can see, lemon, celery, cucumber and watermelon all have properties that can help you fight belly bloat.  You can add one or two of them to your regular juice recipes, or, for the strongest effect, make a juice that contains all four.  One note: Melons are best juiced alone, however, I do not think its the biggest deal to mix them with other things every once in a while.

Just make sure you have a restroom handy for a couple of hours after you drink this “super bloat-fighting juice” – the diuretic effects of these fruits and veggies mean you’ll probably be urinating quite a bit.

Besides helping to fight your belly bloat, juicing lemon, celery, cucumber, and/or watermelon ensures that you’ll get a big dose of healthy nutrients at the same time.

A few other ways to fight belly bloat

  • Reduce your overall salt/sodium intake
  • Avoid eating too many processed foods
  • Limit your intake of carbonated beverages and alcohol
  • Eat high-fiber foods
  • Limit the “gassy” foods you eat (Brussels sprouts, onion and beans, among others, are otherwise healthy foods that are notorious for producing intestinal gas)
  • Make sure you get enough exercise and sleep
  • Drink plenty of fresh water in addition to your juice
  • Fresh aloe vera juice will soothe a sore or sour stomach that could also cause belly bloat- add a little bit to your juices every day
  • Try to swallow less air - drink directly from the cup, glass or other container, not through a straw
  • Avoid high-fat foods
  • Avoid eating large meals – eat four to six smaller meals per day instead of three large ones.

A "banish belly bloat" juice recipe

  • 1 cucumber, sliced
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 1 lemon, peeled
  • 2 apples, cored and sliced

Juice all of these ingredients together in your juicer.  Drink immediately.  If you'd like to add optional green leaf lettuce, this will help too.

You should notice a difference in your bloating within one day, but if you still feel bloated, drink this juice (or one of the other juices for belly bloating) for a few days until you see improvement.

Real V8 Juice Recipe

Do you need a good V8 juice recipe?  I've got you covered with this homemade, natural juice combo.  It's the real deal.  For years now people have been asking me to put together a real V8 juice recipe-one that tastes similar to the bottled version because they wouldn’t dare drink the bottled stuff, of course.  I finally did.

v8 juice recipe

I tried a few veggie combinations, and while my recipe doesn’t exactly contain 8 ingredients, it does really taste like the traditional V8 juice recipe.

But first, I think you know why you shouldn’t drink the bottled V8 juice, but just in case you needed a reminder, here’s why.

  • It’s pasteurized.  All juices on the shelves are pasteurized a.k.a. heated, and when you heat your juice it kills essential enzymes and nutrients, which defeats the purpose of having it.
  • It has “flavoring.”  We don’t really know what that is, but it could be a mix of chemicals, or natural substances to make it taste like they intend.  It could contain MSG or other things that are not good for your body.
  • It is not organic.  Organic and non-GMO produce is really important.  Eating produce grown from a genetically modified seed and sprayed with toxic pesticides is bad news.
  • It’s loaded with sodium (they add salt).  Excess sodium in your diet can cause high blood pressure, water retention and hypertension.  It’s best to keep it low.  So why do they add it?  I believe its because it doesn’t taste good on it’s own, so it’s a secret way to enhance the flavor.  Celery adds a natural sodium to this juice that makes it nice and salty tasting without the dangers of added white table salt.
  • It’s from concentrate and reconstituted.  Do I really need to say anything about this?  :)
  • They add citric acid, potassium chloride, magnesium and vitamin C.  Citric acid is a flavor enhancer and preservative. Potassium chloride is a preservative.  I steer clear of these at all costs. I would venture to say that vitamins are added so they can say that it has more nutrients.  Synthetic vitamins that are made in a lab and that don’t come from real food are sub-par to food vitamins and aren’t absorbed by the body very well.

The bottom line- there are things in this I would never touch.  We just don’t know all the details of the ingredients and some things are unnecessarily added.  It’s always better to juice your own then buy any juice off of the shelf.

When you juice your own, you don’t have to add flavoring, preservatives, sodium or nutrients because it tastes great on it’s own.  You’ll be getting all the goodness of what you juice, including the delicate enzymes.

v8 juice recipe

A Real V8 Juice Recipe

This makes enough for 2 glasses of juice or one large glass (16 ounces)

INGREDIENTS

5 tomatoes

1 beet (greens optional, but I left them out), cut in wedges

4 long carrots

1 bunch of spinach, equal to 2 cups

5 celery stalks

1 small bunch of parsley, about ¼ cup

METHOD

Prepare the tomatoes and beet by cutting them in wedges.  Cut the carrots and celery into 3-inch pieces.  Juice the tomatoes, beet, spinach, celery, carrots and parsley, alternating.   Mix to combine.  Serve immediately.

Variations and enhancements on the V8 juice recipe

  • Like it salty-er?  Add more celery.
  • Like it mostly tomato based?  Add more tomatoes.
  • Want more greens? A handful of lettuce or watercress won’t change the taste too much.
  • Add black pepper for a kick.
  • Add a lime wedge to the recipe or to the glass.
  • Add a dash of cayenne pepper or hot sauce for heat and health benefits.

I know you are going to love this real V8 juice recipe!  Give it a try.  Let me know in the comments below what you thought about it.

Top 3 Reasons to use Lemon in Juicing Recipes

There are so many reasons to use lemon. I love these sweet, tart yellow citrus fruits.  First of all, have you been searching for the perfect thing to add some zing to your juice recipes?  Lemon will do the trick, and you can count on this exceptional fruit to add important nutrients to your juice along with amazing extra flavor.

lemons

Here are my top three reasons to use lemon in juice recipes:

1.   Lemons are packed with essential nutrients.  The reason we juice in the first place is to be able to take advantage of the vitamins, minerals, enzymes, fiber and other nutrients naturally present in fresh produce.  In the case of lemon, those nutrients include substantial amounts of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), folate (vitamin B9), vitamin C, calcium, copper, iron, potassium, fiber, and a substance called limonene (a beneficial phytochemical).  Beta-carotene (which converts to vitamin A in the body), vitamin A, lutein, magnesium, phosphorus and zeaxanthin (a carotenoid antioxidant which, like lutein, is believed to promote healthy vision) are also present, although in smaller amounts.

Among other things, lemons are a superb source of antioxidants, including but not limited to vitamin C.  These substances help protect your body’s cells and tissues from the damaging effects of free radicals.  If left unchecked, free radicals can cause the type of damage that research has found associated with several inflammatory diseases and cancers.  Plus, several of lemon’s nutrients possess potent anti-inflammatory properties.

Actually, the full list of lemon’s beneficial properties is very long, which is awesome.  We haven’t even touched on the benefits of most of the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients in lemons.

2.   Lemon’s tart, acidic flavor will add zest and zing to your juice.   So important!  I can't tell you how many times I use lemon to fix a recipe.  This alone makes it one of the best reasons to use lemon in your juices.  Lemon has the ability to add flavor to almost anything you eat or drink.  Pure lemon juice is too tart to be palatable for most of us, but adding some lemon to your juice recipes just gives your juice some added zest and zing.  That can be important if your motivation to juice every day is waning because the same old flavors are starting to get tiresome or boring.

And let's not forget, lemons are inexpensive and widely available.  Hardly anyone would consider lemons to be an exotic fruit, which means they’re cheaper than many of the options out there.  Not only that, but you’ll be able to find them at virtually any store that sells fresh produce.  Availability and price are important when you’re juicing every day.

3.  Lemon juice has many health benefits.  Let me list a few!

  • Balances pH levels in the body
  • Improves digestive function
  • Assists in skin repair
  • Cleanses the urinary tract
  • Detoxes the liver
  • Curbs appetite well
  • Strengthens immune system

There are many reasons to use lemon in your juice recipes. There are, however, a couple of things to watch out for.

Things to consider when using lemon

  • Lemon rind is high in oxalates.  If you have kidney or gall bladder stones (or a family history of the same), remove the rind before adding lemon to your juice recipes.  Oxalates can crystallize and create or worsen kidney and gall bladder stones.
  • Naringin (one of the flavonoid compounds in lemon) may interfere with the body’s metabolism of some medications.  If you’re taking medication, check with your health care provider before adding lemon to your juice recipes.  The naringin in lemon may halt or interfere with your body’s metabolism of certain medications.  If this occurs, the medication could accumulate in your body instead of being metabolized normally.  Depending on the medication, this, in turn, could create a risk of drug toxicity.

How to use lemons in your juices

Juicing:  Start out by adding just half a lemon in your juice recipes.  You can add the rind, but not too much.  It's very strong. If you aren't a huge fan of the tart flavor, always leave the rind off.

Lemons typically cover up the taste of greens and other produce you might not like.  Mix it with ginger in your juices for even more of a taste cover-up, if needed.  This is a good strategy when coming up with new green juices that might not otherwise taste great.

If you want some ideas on how to use lemons in your juices, check out these citrus recipes.

Blending:  If you don't have a juicer and only a blender, always remove the rind.  Adding a whole peeled lemon to a smoothie will not be as strong as when it's juiced with a juicer, so it's a great way to start.  If you aren't sure you'll like a whole lemon, start with half a lemon.

Morning beverage:  If you rather not juice or blend, but would like the benefit of a lemon drink, try my Lemon Elixer.  Mix the juice of one lemon and 1 tbsp of organic apple cider vinegar to a glass of water.  Drink it in the morning before you consume anything else.  It helps to get everything moving in your body and is a great way to start the day.

Juicing Kale for Healthy Blood Sugar

Kale

The first thing you need to know about kale is that it’s one of the cruciferous vegetables.  This is the famous family of veggies that also contains broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy, mustard greens, turnip, and rutabaga.

Collectively, because they’re such powerhouses of nutrition, they’re often referred to as “super-veggies.”  Basically, they have it all:  abundant vitamins, minerals and fiber, together with a rich assortment of phytochemicals that help fight off disease.

Because kale is a leafy green cruciferous veggie, it’s automatically one of the most nutritious, healthful foods you could eat (or drink, when it’s juiced).  It’s versatile, too:  kale can be eaten fresh as part of a leafy green salad; it can be lightly sautéed and used as a bed for salmon or baked chicken; or it can be juiced together with other nutritious produce.

Kales nutritional profile and other health benefits

No matter how you consume it, though, kale provides a host of vitamins, minerals and other important nutrients.  Its list of constituent nutrients is exceptionally long and includes vitamins A, B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folate), C, E and K.  Calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and potassium are among the minerals present in substantial amounts in kale.  And not to be outdone by its cruciferous cousins, kale also contains fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, glucosinolates (phytonutrients that facilitate and help regulate the body’s own detox mechanisms), and antioxidant/anti-inflammatory carotenoids and flavonoids like beta-carotene, kaempferol, lutein and quercetin.

A single cup of kale will give you 134% of the daily recommended amount of vitamin C.  It also provides 204% of the recommended amount of vitamin A and a whopping 684% of your vitamin K.  All with just 33 calories!

Among other things, all that natural goodness in kale supports proper blood clotting; healthy, strong skin, muscles, bones and teeth; good vision; and proper function of your nervous, cardiovascular and digestive systems.  Some of kale’s nutrients may help reduce your risk of developing certain types of cancers, vascular disease like atherosclerosis, gastric or duodenal ulcer, or even cataracts or asthma.

But besides this long list of potential health benefits that kale can provide, you might also be able to use kale to help you balance and regulate your blood sugar.

How kale in your juice can help balance out blood sugar

A little background on blood glucose and insulin levels

We all need some sugar in our blood.  It comes from the foods and beverages you eat and drink, and your body uses that sugar as a source of energy.  Unfortunately, it’s possible for your blood sugar to be too high (hyperglycemia) or too low (hypoglycemia).  Like Goldilocks, what you want is a blood sugar level that’s balanced and “just right.”

In large part, your blood sugar (blood glucose) levels are regulated by insulin - a storage hormone produced by your pancreas that helps regulate your body’s metabolism of fats and carbohydrates.  Of course, the types of foods and beverages you eat and drink also play a role:  sugary foods and other sweets, carbonated beverages (the non-diet kind), processed foods, refined, simple carbohydrates and alcohol all contribute to the amount of sugar in your blood.

Like it or not, your body’s secretion of most hormones (insulin included) is sensitive to a variety of factors.   The amount of insulin that’s released by your pancreas into your bloodstream is impacted by how well you sleep, how often you exercise, your stress levels, the medications you take, and the foods and beverages you eat and drink.

After you eat, your blood sugar level will rise, and the higher it goes, the more insulin will be secreted in order to prevent it from rising too high.  Unfortunately, that means your insulin and blood sugar levels can easily swing out of balance and stop being “just right.”  When that happens, your blood sugar can skyrocket or plummet and you’ll often feel lethargic.  If your blood sugar gets out of whack too often, you’ll probably become more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

If your consumption of sugary items is excessive (or your diet has too many ingredients that convert into sugar inside your body), your body will often store the excess sugar in your fat tissues.  Remember, insulin is a storage hormone.  Among other problems, high insulin levels caused by high blood sugar often result in fat gain.  Not getting enough sugar in your system can cause problems too – your body won’t be getting an important energy source.  It might react by going into “starvation mode” (your metabolism slows down drastically and tries to “hoard” its energy sources, inhibiting the breakdown of fat).  Either way, you could end up gaining weight and suffering from excessive blood sugar fluctuations.

That’s two of the reasons that sweets and sugary foods and beverages are such a big no-no for diabetics.  Fortunately, you can control the amount of sugar you consume by modifying your diet.  To a certain degree, you can also balance and control the amount of insulin your pancreas secretes just by eating the right foods and avoiding blood sugar spikes and troughs.

Eating the right foods and drinking the right beverages gives you two blood sugar-related benefits:  (1) it will help to directly balance and control your blood sugar levels; and (2) it will help balance and control your blood insulin levels, which indirectly helps balance your blood sugar.

Where does kale come in?

Kale is a super green and contains chlorophyll. Chemically speaking, a molecule of chlorophyll closely resembles a molecule of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the substance in your red blood cells that carries the life-sustaining oxygen you breathe throughout your body.  Because of its strong molecular similarity to hemoglobin, chlorophyll can help oxygenate your body and balance blood sugar. Chlorophyll helps to restore and cleanse your body.

Greens like kale will help to maintain a healthier pH in your body.  If your body’s pH tips too far onto the acid side of the scale, you’ll probably become more susceptible to infections and certain types of illnesses.  A green juice or smoothie made from dark leafy greens and alkaline fruits will help your body’s pH reach and remain in the healthy range, which can often be a problem in individuals with unbalanced blood sugar.

Besides all the other goodness it contains, a cup of kale can give you up to 3 grams of fiber.  In addition to helping to ensure digestive tract health, fiber helps slow the rise of your blood sugar after a meal.  Kale, therefore, juicing kale can help balance blood sugar levels.  Plus, a single cup also contains almost 3 grams of protein, which can also help stabilize your blood sugar.

Basically, kale is one of the most wholesome and beneficial foods you could consume.  It’s one of the true “superfoods,” so try to juice it often.  Aim to incorporate kale or another high-fiber veggie into every meal.

Juicing transformation Dees story

Dees Juicing Spotlight

Tell us about yourself!

Hi everyone! Well, I live in the States, the northeast actually, just south of Boston, Ma. I'm a 47 year old mother of four fantastic kids (three smart and beautiful grown daughters, and a very handsome witty son). I'm a grandmother of 1 and 1/2....new baby coming in January! (We actually find out tonight if it's a boy or girl. SO excited!) I've been married for 20 years this fall to a very supportive and encouraging man. I come from a loving and close family, the last of 8 kids, and am fortunate enough and happy to say I'm still enjoying times with my mom and dad. We own our home in a nice, historical town on the south shore, just minutes from the beach.

I'm a Christian woman with a strong faith. I've raised my kids with strict morals and beliefs and am so grateful that they, as young adults, have standards and work ethics which are not seen very much in today's generation. So clearly I have many reasons to be happy and content, don't I? Well yes, I certainly do. But have I been? No I haven't, and for many, many years. But more about that below.

What inspired you to change your life?

Well, on whim I decided to do a juice cleanse. I thought "why not?" I'll clean out all the toxins and maybe start, yet again, on another way to lose some weight. Being overweight for years caused me so much unhappiness and awful insecurities. I, like so many, tried over and over again to diet, try this new idea, that new idea, take this pill, avoid this, avoid that. I'd start strong, lose weight, momentary happiness and then nothing. I'd fizzle out after a few weeks or whatever I was doing just stopped "doing".

Crash and burn---AGAIN. Muscle pain was daily, sluggishness, low self esteem, depression, no energy, and yo yo weight loss and regain. I avoided mirrors and sometimes just didn't want to get out of bed, sleeping in as long as I could before my extremely busy days started. I wouldn't buy anything new for myself knowing how frustrated I'd be in the changing room.

I suffered from feeling hot ALL THE TIME, no matter what the temperature was. So uncomfortable in my own body I wanted to just scream sometimes. There was no motivation to dress nice or even try to look pretty or to go anywhere because I'd just be a dripping sweaty mess by the time I got to the car. I cried, I complained, I hurt inside so much. I don't think anyone, even my own husband and kids really knew how much - although they certainly were witness to it every day and tried to encourage me or make suggestions. It was just plain old awful.

Then a few months ago, the migraines started. Yup, painful, day-and night-long migraines. "It's menopause" I heard. "It's stress" was another. And so on....just one big unhappy, sick, unhealthy, insecure, middle aged woman who just figured "yup, this is me, for the rest of my life. Deal with it cause it's who I am". Terrible isn't it?

Did you set any goals for yourself?

Actually no I didn't. I was excited to do the juice cleanse and all but never expected the results I got! I just figured, ok, I know this will be good for me and maybe I'll start back up with my walks and see what happens. Why not?

How did All About Juicing contribute to your success?

Ok well, I could write a small book about this question. After the cleanse which was three days, I stepped on the scale on the fourth morning and whoa! It blew my mind. I had literally dropped 10 pounds! I thought, no way..that can't be possible, but there it was. Ten pounds gone. Now, I knew that certainly wasn't body fat but was toxins, water weight, etc and thought to myself, hey I can really like this whole juicing thing. I went online and poof, there was Vanessa and her wonderful self. I read and took notes and read some more and took more notes.

I was like a sponge. I learned, I did some more digging and just clicked all around her site for as much information as I could squeeze into this brain of mine. It was awesome! I got her e-books, joined the club, bought a juicer and hit the produce section of the grocery store. Haven't looked back since.

How did you stay motivated and meet your goals?

After those initial days, motivation wasn't too hard because all of a sudden, my entire life and body started changing. That alone kept me going and does every day. More weight came off, more knowledge. Less pain, more knowledge. Prettier glowing skin, more knowledge. I was waking up ready to rock and roll hours earlier than normal. My walks turned into full on workouts. More body changes, inside and out. I felt clean, vibrant, energized, and so, so happy. My kids and my husband were like " wow!" and "Look at you!" and " You look beautiful today hun." My blood pressure went down, my 15 years of daily muscle pain was gone, the weight was coming off, the migraines stopped, and guess what? It hit me after about 3 weeks..."oh my gosh! I'm not hot anymore!" And what's more, I'm not even at my goal weight yet. I've lost about 25 pounds and several inches, but I don't care as much about WEIGHT like I did all those years. Because of how I FEEL, the weight loss is just an added "whoo-hoo!"  How 'bout THAT for a change in thinking?

Did you have any setbacks?  How did you overcome them?

So far I can honestly say I've had no setbacks. I eat clean, drink water, exercise, juice and enjoy the results on a daily basis. I give myself a treat every so often and have no guilt pangs about it. It's funny, on the few occasions I had some no-so-healthy cook-out food or some yummy comfort food, I could LITERALLY feel it and almost run to my juicer the next morning. It's almost like my body won't allow me to have setbacks because it just feels too good to be vibrant and energized. It really is amazing what just a few adjustments like eating clean and drinking pure delicious juices and smoothies can do. It's not hard--that's the crazy thing! It just isn't. No counting calories, no counting fat grams, no gimmicks, no pills....nothing but educating yourself on what "clean" eating is and juice along with it. Simple.

What are some of your favorite juices or smoothies?

Oh boy, let's see. Well, I drink some kind of green juice every day from Vanessa's recipes. I love the spicy zip from tomato, romaine, celery, and cayenne pepper. I've begun making my own almond and coconut milk so adding those to some mixed berries and a banana or two is delicious in the morning mixed with oatmeal. I did the 14 day beauty challenge with Vanessa and can say I loved every one of those juices. An all-citrus juice with grapefruit, orange, lemon, pineapple with coconut water is really refreshing. And oh my gosh, yes....carrots. Carrot juice with just about anything -- apples, spinach, beets, romaine, tomatoes. Or all of 'em together. Guess it's safe to say I don't have a "favorite" huh? I try them all. Just click around on her site and give it a go.

Do you exercise, and if so, what is your routine?

Yup, I certainly do. Every other night at the beach I walk 4 or so miles with hand weights and work my arms while I do. And no, I don't care who stares at me or comments although sometimes, I hear very nice remarks. On the off night, I exercise here at home. Squats, abs, Swiss ball exercises, kettle bell exercises, stretching, routines I pick up on Facebook or people I follow on Instagram. Sometimes when I just wanna relax, I don't exercise at all but am conscience not to let it happen again the next night. No need for expensive equipment or trips to the gym. Although there's nothing wrong with that if you like that sort of thing---go for it. Oh, and I incorporating moves in my daily routine like squats while I fold laundry, or kickbacks while I'm at the kitchen sink. Reaching for something? Do a lunge to grab it or stretch shoulders and sides to reach it. Take stairs or better yet, do them twice at home on your way to the bedroom or kids room or laundry room. Be creative. Make it silly and fun and you'll be laughing at yourself!

What are some of your favorite meals and snacks?

I LOVE chicken Caesar salad wraps. No croutons and easy on the dressing but yumm. I can have one every day. Almonds and hard boiled eggs for snacks. But instead of eating the yolk in all of them, I usually eat one whole and maybe 2 or 3 others but just the whites. Omelettes with veggies, chicken salad with veggies mixed in, tuna salad with lemon juice instead of mayo and veggies. Oh, and try this....on a healthy roll or bagel put lettuce, tomato, a green pepper slice, alfalfa sprouts, red onion, cucumber slice and if you want maybe some turkey or chicken. Absolutely delicious. Grilled veggies, zucchini pasta, yogurt with fresh fruit...My guideline pretty much is the less ingredients, the better for me. Don't eat it if you can't pronounce it.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to get healthier and needs motivation?

Please, please, please......just TRY juicing. Just start with once a day. If you don't have a juicer and can't afford a quality one, throw some things in a blender and give a smoothie a shot. Know that late afternoon time when you could just lie down and take a nap? Don't. Instead, whip up a juice from Vanessa recipes and just watch what happens. Motivation? Go online and meet people like Vanessa and sites like hers. Follow fitness and clean eating people on Instagram and Facebook. Instead of feeding yourself with social media gossip, feed your mind with healthy tips and recipes. LISTEN to the people that have had success doing it the RIGHT way. And most of all, keep it simple! It can be very confusing out there and can be easily overwhelming. Follow just a few key people and keep your fitness education simple. Set daily goals as well as long term ones. By the end of the day ask yourself when you put your head on the pillow, "so, how'd I do? Did I attain that goal I set for myself this morning?" If so, kuddos to you!

Anything else you'd like to share with the community?

I'm currently praying about it and hoping to open my own juice bar next spring. I want to do this so much! If it's meant to be, IT'LL BE, right?! I'll make it a FUN place to visit and a place to educate others. Kinda scary but very exciting. It'll be a family operated shop as well. One of my daughters is a massage therapist and is beginning to sell essential healing oils. The other starts esthetician school next month. Eventually, I'd like to incorporate them both into the juice bar so my customers can enjoy a yummy juice before or after their massage or facial. My witty and wonderful son will spread the word and bring in millions! :) And my other daughter will juice along with me in the shop. Hubby will be my support and encouragement. Hope it becomes a reality and a hit!!!

By the way, I haven't been too fond of cameras for the past several years so I really don't have many pics but when I hit my health and weight goal, I will post a before and after. For now, I posted a facial shot so you can at least see the person behind the words.

Most of all, I truly hope someone out there who has read this will be blessed and encouraged to make those changes you've wanted to. Stop the merry-go-round of sickness and sadness TODAY. Don't forget, it's not about weight, it's about HEALTH. The extra pounds you lose are a bonus!

And remember, eat and drink like your life depends on it, cause it does!

Spiced Apple Cider Juice Recipe

Apple cider is awesome.  And when you make it fresh, raw and natural it's even better.  It's surprisingly easy and delightfully nutritious.

spiced apple cider recipe

If you're a regular juicer, you know that store bought juices have lots of icky ingredients.  High fructose corn syrup?  No thanks.  Natural flavors?  Nah..  Coloring?  Oh gosh, no way, no how.  But we love spiced apple cider, right?  LOVE IT.

Its like warm boots, cozy socks, sitting by the fireplace, family and friends celebrating the season.  It's a must!  Cider that you buy in the market should be just raw unfiltered apple juice.  No additives, colorings, etc, etc.  Many times, I see them for purchase, and they look good, but they are pasteurized. Make your own and you can drink the nutrients.  Because this recipe is spiced, you get the added health benefits of cinnamon and nutmeg.  Let's look at the benefits of this spiced apple cider, which, maybe should really be a health tonic :)

Spiced apple cider benefits

Benefits of apples.  I can hear you now, but Vanessa, this has sugar!  Yes, apples have sugar, but they also have so many other good things, so lets not forget these:  The peel and pulp are rich in anti-inflammatories, antioxidants and fiber.  The nutrients present in apples may help to slow the signs of aging and improve some bodily functions.  They may even help deter the development of certain chronic health conditions.

A 2001 University of California research study that employed human subjects indicates that the quercetin that exists in fresh apples decreases the amount of cholesterol plaque that builds up on artery walls, thereby reducing the likelihood of heart attack and cardiovascular disease.  Moreover, the potassium in apples is important for proper cardiac function.  Apples are rich in antioxidants such as flavonoids and polyphenols.  The cleansing properties of these constituents can help remove waste, toxins and other harmful substances from the body.

Benefits of cinnamon. There are many, many health benefits of cinnamon- too many to list!  Studies have shown that 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon added to your diet each day can aid in lowering LDL (the bad) cholesterol.  It may help stabilize blood sugar.  It has anti-fungal properties.  It's a natural remedy for headaches.

Benefits of nutmeg. Nutmeg has been used for centuries as a medicinal source for easing digestive troubles.  It has antibacterial properties that aid the teeth and gums. Nutmeg is often used by holistic practitioners to rev up blood circulation and treat kidney infections.

Real spiced apple cider recipe

INGREDIENTS

Serves 1

  • 3 large apples, cored and chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg

Serves 4 (for a group!)

  • 12 large apples
  • 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg

METHOD

Cut and core the apples.  Juice the apples.  Add cinnamon and nutmeg to the juice.  Add more cinnamon and nutmeg if you like it and if you want more of the health benefits.  Stir to combine. Serve near a cozy fire or on a comfy couch.

If you want to make more for your friends and family, multiply the recipe.

You could warm this juice, however, cooking any juice will destroy many of the delicate nutrients and enzymes that are present in fresh juice.  If you do want it to be heated, warm it gently on low heat, in a pan, over the stove (not a microwave).

For the maximum amount of health benefits, it's best to drink this spiced apple cider at room temperature, right after it's been juiced.

If you want to blend this recipe, that will still work but will be very thick and will need adjusting.  Add 1-2 cups of water or coconut water to adjust consistency.  You also may need to add more cinnamon and nutmeg.

Using ginger in juices and smoothies | Health benefits of gingerroot

You might have noticed that I put a lot of ginger in my recipes.  It’s not just because it tastes good and is my secret trick to hide the taste of greens and other produce that aren’t so palatable.  It’s also because it’s super good for you.  It’s one of our best friends for hiding taste and adding nutrition.

I’ve done a little digging to compile the latest health benefit- and it’s no surprise why it’s been used medicinally for thousands of years.  Take a look at why I’m always including this root in my juice and smoothie recipes, at least a few times a week.

Fresh ginger for juices and smoothies

Health benefits of ginger

A favorite ingredient in traditional Asian and Asian-inspired dishes, ginger root also has a long history of use as an herbal remedy for excessive intestinal gas and certain other symptoms of gastrointestinal distress.  Although ginger only contains insignificant traces of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, modern research has verified that it does have several health-benefiting properties.

For example, several recent studies confirm that it can help prevent or alleviate the unpleasant nausea, vomiting, cold sweats, and dizziness that are associated with motion sickness – seasickness in particular.  Research has also shown that ginger is effective in reducing the nausea and vomiting that are associated with pregnancy, without any risk of significant side effects that may harm either the fetus or the mother.

This root also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.  Compounds called “gingerols” appear to be responsible for both.  Research confirms that many arthritis sufferers have better mobility, less swelling in their joints, and less general joint pain after adding ginger to their diet for several months.  Among other things, ginger has been shown to suppress the production of compounds that promote inflammation in and near the joints.

The antioxidant properties exhibited by gingerols may also be responsible for part of the improvement seen in arthritis patients.  Antioxidants help protect the body from the effects of free radicals, which are known to damage cells, organs and other tissues – potentially including the tissues comprising and surrounding joints.

According to research conducted on mice a little over a decade ago, gingerols may also suppress the growth of colon cancer cells.  A different study found that gingerols may kill ovarian cancer cells.

A recent German study discovered that sweat contains a powerful antimicrobial compound that might help fight off certain fungal and bacterial infections.  Because it can help induce sweating, this discovery means that it might provide some protection against skin infections caused by Candida albicans (a common species of yeast which lives on the skin), Staphylococcus aureus (a species of bacteria that’s responsible for many skin infections) and certain strains of Escherichia coli.

In juices and smoothies

Ginger is pretty powerful and very potent.  When adding it to juices or smoothies, you just want to add a little knob.  You'll have to start slow by testing out the amount that you like, but most people like to juice or smoothie about half and inch.  You can add more to smoothies because it not as strong (taste wise) when it's blended.

Ginger shot recipe

Have you seen these juice shots in juice bars?  Making a shot is a great idea if you do it right.  Drinking ginger alone is doable, but isn't ideal. It also doesn't yield much juice, and a little does go a long way. Mixing it with lemon and apple are my choice for a anti-inflammatory, immune boosting shot.  This is great for circulation, nausea, and if you're coming down with something and feel ill.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1-2 inch piece of ginger
  • 1 apple, cored
  • 1/2 lemon, rind ok

METHOD

You'll need a juicer to make this juice shot.  Core and slice the apple.  Slice a lemon in half.  Juice the ginger, apple, and lemon together. Serve.

OPTIONAL VARIATIONS

  • 1 tsp of honey, optional, if desired
  • 1 tbsp of organic apple cider vinegar, optional

Add honey and apple cider vinegar and mix, if desired.  These ingredients add an extra nutritional boost, but is not needed.

The shot will be powerful and strong, but that is the point.  It will give you an added boost of nutrition to your diet and your day.  Enjoy!

Making ginger tea

If you don't have a juicer or a blender, or want to switch it up, make homemade ginger tea.  All you need to do is cut a few small pieces of fresh ginger and place it in the bottom of your mug.  Pour boiling water over it and let it steep for a good 5 to 10 minutes.  Remove the ginger, add stevia or honey to taste, and serve.
